Herbert Harold Ransburg, Sr. of Shreveport passed away June 13th after a lengthy illness at Riverview Care Center in Bossier City. He was 88.
Ransburg, a native of Keatchie and a U.S. Air Force veteran, was the second of seven children born to Thomas Ransburg, Sr. and Ella D. McClure Ransburg. He was valedictorian of Logansport Rosenwald High School and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and later LSU-Shreveport. In the Air Force, he was stationed in Colorado, Texas and Puerto Rico and visited 12 foreign countries, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. He logged over 1,200 hours of flying time, mostly on the B-36, B-29 and B-50. After an honorable discharge, he settled in Shreveport, and he and his wife, Ethel, raised five children on Flora Avenue in the Mooretown neighborhood. He was a photography buff who enjoyed developing his own prints. He also enjoyed carpentry and did much of the work himself as they expanded the size of their home.
Ransburg worked at Libbey Owens Ford, Ford Motor Company and the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant. He became a licensed electrician and worked for SWEPCO for 25 years. He also worked with Pannell's General Contracting and Associated Electric Inc. He served on the Shreveport Electrical Board and was a member of the Standard Social Club and the Krewe of the Nile. He also reigned as king.
Ransburg will be sorely missed by a multitude of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ella Ransburg; brothers, Robert Ransburg and Thomas Ransburg, Jr.; sister, Addie Laide Ransburg Sloan; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Ivory Nell Ransburg; sister-in-law, Marlene Williams; son-in-law, Staff Sgt. Kevin Johnson; nephew, Huey P. Sloan, Jr.; nieces, Sherran Ransburg and Ursula Ransburg; and cousin Leroy Patterson.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Wynder Ransburg; four daughters, Vicki L. Caldwell West, Shyrl L. Caldwell Johnson, Eleanor Ransburg and Cynthia Ransburg (Eli) Brown; one son, Herbert Harold (Onzie) Ransburg, Jr.; 11 grandchildren, Gregoire Che Colson, Ashley Ransburg (Cordell) Scott, Herbert Harold (Ponce) Ransburg III, Aaron Jamal West, Sebron Emile (Erieona) West, Kevin Christopher Johnson, Elliot Montgomery Brown, Thomas W. Ransburg, Taelor Alexander Ransburg, Olivia Alexandria West and Nicholas Alexander Johnson; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Gracie Ransburg, Sr., and Jerry (Jud) and Vivian Ransburg; brother-in-law, Huey P. Sloan Sr.; and a wealth of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
